About Janice White

I always knew I needed to work closely with people but didn’t get there until I was in my 30’s.  And so, I had found the career for me – Occupational Therapy (OT). As an Occupational Therapist, I’ve loved the founding philosophy which sees a person and their choice of priorities as paramount to their own progress, whatever their circumstances.  The big picture ethos and collaborative approach of OT has given me a wonderful working life for over 20 years.  As a result, the natural progression from OT was to study the discipline of Counselling. Counselling utilises our therapeutic relationship to assist you to find your ‘Why’ and ‘How’.

I have found that life experience has been my greatest teacher, especially learning from my mistakes!  Life’s learning can be linked to our early family environments, cultural background, education opportunities, and the media. These learnings can help us develop our worldview and give us our values.  Though there are many more variables to mention here, such as the era we were born in and our birth order, and all of these factors make us who we are.  I have been married three times, moved continents as a young adult and have six children (blessed with three from another mother), my life has been a journey full of ups and downs.

My education

I have been fortunate to study a Bachelor of Science (OT) at Curtin University and a Master of Counselling at Murdoch University.  I feel very privileged to have had these benefits and wish to utilise the skills and knowledge I have gained throughout my life.  In my professional practice I have gained experience in the following areas:

  • Mental Health
  • Aged Care – Residential and Community Care
  • Palliative Care
  • Spinal Injury
  • Recovery after accidents or trauma
  • Orthopaedics and general medical
  • Paediatrics
  • Medico-legal assessment
  • Disability
  • Home visiting for modifications and equipment prescription
  • Veterans affairs

My approach

All of the above, life and professional experiences have contributed to my understanding as a Counsellor.  I wish to help people gain clarity about any problematic issues they have.  In conclusion, I use a collaborative, problem-solving perspective in the counselling room.  Listening, and empowering people to act (if they wish) is my reason to be.
